The Stellar network is an open payment network that connects disparate financial systems, allowing anyone to build low-cost financial services for their community - payments, savings, loans and insurance. The Stellar network allows people, companies and financial institutions to transfer money directly between each other as easily as email. This interconnectedness means more personal access, lower banking costs and more revenue for businesses.
Stellar Lumens (XLM) cryptocurrency is used to drive cross-border digital payments on the blockchain. It is one of the earliest decentralized projects and cryptocurrency ecosystems, launched in 2014 by Ripple Labs co-founder Jed McCaleb.
Ripple is a solution developed for banking, while Stellar focuses on digital payments. Stellar is one of the most valuable decentralized projects, backed by the Stellar Development Foundation.
The cryptocurrency of Stellar Lumens uses the token code XLM, which is used to easily make low-cost payments in the Stellar Lumens network with transaction speeds of three to five seconds. XLM prices are updated in real time on Binance. Stellar (XLM) Fast transactions, supporting 1,000 operations per second. Transactions are confirmed instantly, usually in less than 5 seconds. Most applications work with Stellar through the API Horizon, and Stellar supports JavaScript and Java to set up connections to Horizon. An open source code, maximum decentralization.
The Stellar network is also supported by the Stellar Development Foundation. The foundation is a non-profit organization responsible for helping maintain the Stellar network codebase and supporting the Stellar community.
A total of 100 billion XLM tokens were created when Stellar launched in July 2014. In the private seed round held earlier in May 2014, $2 billion was sold and pre-allocated. These were purchased jointly by Jed McCaleb, founder of Stellar, and Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe, for $3 million. The purpose was to provide seed funding for the establishment of the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF).
From the launch of Stellar until the community vote held in October 2019, the supply of XLM grew at an annual inflation rate of 1%. After the 2019 vote, the inflation mechanism was removed and more than half of the maximum supply of tokens were burned and removed from circulation. From that point on, it was also decided that no more XLM would be created. The new maximum supply of XLM is just over 50 billion tokens.
Currently, the SDF holds nearly 60% of the total supply of XLM. It will be used for the development and promotion of the Stellar network and will gradually enter the circulating supply over time.

Stellar uses a different consensus protocol, called the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), which is completely different from the Proof of Work (PoW) algorithm that cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum are familiar with. Stellar cannot be mined either, all Stellar coins are pre-mined before they are issued. The only way to get free Stellar coins is through airdrops or crypto faucets.
