What is a Bitcoin private key?

A private key is a secret block of data that proves you have the right to spend bitcoins from a specific wallet, and is implemented through a cryptographic signature. If you use a wallet software, your private key is stored on your computer; if you use an online wallet, your private key is stored on a remote server. Never disclose private keys, because they can allow you to spend bitcoins in the corresponding bitcoin wallet.
