It could happen. But for now, Bitcoin is still the most popular decentralized virtual currency, but there is no guarantee that it will always remain in this position. There are already some alternative currencies that are inspired by Bitcoin. However, it is reasonable to assume that new currencies will need to have significant improvements to replace Bitcoin in the current established market, of course, these are still unpredictable. Bitcoin may also adopt some of the improvements of competing currencies without changing the basic components of the protocol.
