Axie Infinity is a highly popular play-to-earn (P2E) game where players can earn blockchain tokens by playing. Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) serve as the settlement token within the Axie Infinity ecosystem and are used to purchase in-game NFT assets.
The game focuses on collecting Axies—NFT-based digital pets that can be used to battle other players. Players can earn different tokens by engaging with various game modes: Smooth Love Potion (SLP) from battle gameplay, and AXS from tournament gameplay.
Within the Axie Infinity ecosystem, players can stake AXS to earn rewards, participate in decentralized governance, or trade assets on the Axie NFT marketplace.
AXS plays a key role in the Axie Infinity game cycle, as it can be used to breed new Axies. These Axies can then be used in battles to collect more AXS and SLP tokens. The collected tokens are further used to create new Axies for sale or trade.
On March 29, 2022, the team behind Ronin Network—a game-focused Ethereum sidechain developed by Sky Mavis—announced that it had been hacked. The company lost approximately $625 million worth of crypto assets in the attack.
The attacker exploited a vulnerability in the cross-chain bridge between Ronin and the Ethereum blockchain, stealing 173,600 ETH and $25.5 million USDC—worth over $625 million at the time. The attacker was later identified as the notorious Lazarus Group. So far, only $30 million of the stolen funds have been recovered.
Three months after the hack, the Ronin network was relaunched, and all affected user funds were reimbursed. The network underwent one internal and two external audits by blockchain security firms Verichains and Certik. New measures were implemented to prevent future attacks.
In June 2022, Axie Infinity announced it would spend $216.5 million to reimburse victims of the Ronin bridge hack. The company also raised $150 million from crypto exchange Binance to help fund the reimbursement.
Thanks to its massive popularity, Axie Infinity has large communities on all major social media platforms. The game has over 400,000 fans on Facebook, nearly 1 million followers on Twitter, and more than 1 million users across various regional Discord servers.
The AXS token is primarily used for governance within the Axie Infinity ecosystem. It has a limited total supply of 270 million tokens, all of which were minted at launch.
Currently, only 83 million AXS tokens are in circulation. The total allocation of AXS tokens is as follows:
- 20% for rewarding Axie Infinity players (play-to-earn)
- 29% for staking rewards to token holders
- 8% to the Axie Infinity ecosystem fund
- 21% to the developer, Sky Mavis
- 7% to advisors
- 11% for public sale
- 4% for private sale
AXS tokens follow a 65-month issuance schedule starting from the public sale date on November 4, 2020. More information about AXS token release and unlock timelines can be found in their whitepaper.
AXS was developed by Sky Mavis, a Vietnam-based game development company founded by CEO Trung Nguyen, along with Tu Doan, Aleksander Larsen, Jeffrey Zirlin, and Andy Ho.
Axie Infinity was created to introduce blockchain technology in a fun and educational way. Nguyen began developing the game in 2017 after being inspired by the success of CryptoKitties. The game’s beta version was released in 2018.
In October 2021, Axie Infinity announced a $152 million Series B funding round led by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which pushed the game’s valuation to $3 billion. Before this, the game had surpassed 2 million daily active users (DAU), with reported total sales reaching nearly $2.3 billion.
